Estudiantes de Singapur brillan en las competiciones internacionales de ciencia y matemáticas

SINGAPORE: Students from Singapore performed well at the International Olympiads for Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Informatics and Physics in July and August, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Tuesday (Aug 30).

At the 27th International Biology Olympiad in Hanoi, the Singapore team clinched four gold medals, coming in first overall among 252 students from 72 countries. The gold medallists are Mok Kai Lin, Jacy from Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), and Li Jiaqi, Lim Yi Shen Justin and Tang Fengjie from Raffles Institution (RI).

At the 48th International Chemistry Olympiad held in Tbilisi, Georgia, Singapore students won two gold medals and two Silver medals, placing sixth among 264 students from 64 countries. The gold medallists are Wong Huai Zhe, Mathew from RI and Nan Zhihan from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (NUSHS). The silver medallists are Wang Kaiying from RI and Glen Goh Wee Zhuan from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.

 

Nan Zhihan was also awarded the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Prize for achieving the highest score in the experimental examination.

At the 47th International Physics Olympiad in Zurich, Switzerland, Singapore won two gold medals and three silver medals, placing seventh among 400 students from 84 countries. The gold medallists are Lee Yuan and Feng Jiahai, both from RI. The Silver medallists are Koh Jin Ming and Ng Jian Rong, both from NUSHS, and Lee Yu Tse from RI.

At the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad held in Hong Kong, Singapore students won four gold medals and two silver medals, coming in fourth among 568 participants from 109 countries. The gold medallists are Dylan Toh Shan Hong from NUSHS, and Glen Lim Wei An, Sheldon Kieren Tan and Ma Zhao Yu from RI. The silver medallists are Bryan Wang Peng Jun from HCI, and Joel Tan Junyao from NUSHS.

At the 28th International Olympiad in Informatics in Kazan, Russia, the Singapore team won one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal, placing ninth in a field of 306 students from 84 countries. The gold medallist is Teo Por Loong, Jacob from NUSHS, the silver medallists are Clarence Chew Xuan Da from NUSHS and Pang Wen Yuen from RI. The bronze medalist is Zhang Guangxuan from RI.

The International Olympiads bring together students from around the world to compete in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Students are put through rigorous competitions to demonstrate their mastery of mathematical and scientific concepts, and to test their experimental and programming skills.
